The Spain Trip
Our first day at the track didn't get off to the best of starts. It rained shortly before Tim's session which left the circuit damp. Tim went out on slicks and unknown to me, he crashed on lap two!! Undeterred, Tim picked himself and his bike up, got it started and carried on. Ten laps later, we called him in to re-fuel, to discover a broken fairing, screen and bent handlebars! The crash had taken its toll on Tim though, as soon after coming in he was pale and complaining of nausea and a headache. A cracked helmet was evidence of a substantial blow to his head; once again the superb construction of his Shark RSR2 helmet had done its job.
Tim sat out the rest of the morning session to recover, while we repaired the damage to his bike. After lunch, Tim had perked up and went out and completed another 40 laps of the 2.2 mile Albacete circuit.
The following day Tim completed another 20 laps of the twisty circuit, all the time learning more about the Honda GP125 and steadily improving his lap times. In the afternoon, the fastest 40 riders were invited to race a 20 lap race; Tim had missed the cut off time by 0.6 seconds. The cut off being 1min.45.9 seconds and Tim's best at that point was a 1min.46.5 seconds. Disappointed at not making the cut, Tim said "just let me go dad, the worst they will do is send me back", so off he went and managed to blag his way onto the grid.(The only GP125, the rest were all 600's and 1000's) Tim's first lap was a 1.45.5 followed by 18 successive laps in the 1.44's and a fastest lap of 1.43.8 which resulted in 11th place overall!!
Buoyed by his result, Tim was in confident mood on the third day and took part in another 20 lap race, this time however, his race lasted all of two laps as he high-sided out of P2, pushing too hard too early.
Overall it was a good trip, despite the two crashes, Tim covered a lot of miles, (250 miles), and learned a lot about the Honda GP125. Thanks to all at Bob Grant racing who arranged the trip and took great care of us for the duration of our stay.
