Round 9 of the British 125GP Championship saw Falkirk's Tim Hastings deliver another strong performance during what proved to be an immensely tough weekend at Mallory Park in Leicestershire.
Having arrived in the rain on Friday morning, the team was preparing for their first free practice session when the tragic news came through that Ollie Bridewell had been fatally injured during the day's first superbike session. The 21 year old from Wiltshire was one of the most popular riders in the British Superbike series and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
As a sombre BSB paddock came to terms with the loss, the rain became steadily worse and it came as no surprise when all further track action was abandoned for the day.
The constant rain continued to cause major problems around the circuit on Saturday morning, and it was therefore decided that the normal qualifying sessions would be cancelled and starting positions for Sunday’s race would be determined instead by championship positions. This meant that Tim would start from 21st place on the sixth row of the grid. A slight improvement in conditions during the afternoon allowed the riders to take to the track for a half hour practice session later in the day, and Tim ended Saturday 33rd on the timesheets.
In contrast to the previous two days, Sunday dawned with brilliant sunshine, and the second round of free practice sessions got underway on schedule. Tim put in a better performance on the dry track and ended the session in 28th overall, only 2.8 seconds off the pole position.
Perhaps over anxious to deliver at a track he knew well, Tim for once made a poor start to his race and dropped back a number of places, ending the first lap in 28th. Despite the setback, he managed to claw back a number of places during the 20 lap race, and crossed the line in 21st place overall - a result which also gained him 5 points for an 11th place finish in the Cup competition.
For many reasons this was a difficult weekend all round, and one throughout which not only Tim, but all the riders from all the various BSB classes, coped admirably.
On behalf of all at Banks Racing & Team Twister we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Bridewell family in this most difficult of times. RIP Ollie.
